In 2000 through 2001 Ericsson Management requested the support of DanCell in connection with the radio planning for a number of operators bidding for the Swedish UMTS (WCDMA) licenses.
The licenses issued in Sweden were based on a beauty contest rather than auction which put additional pressure on the engineers since key criteria in connection with the granting of the licenses were detailed documentation of coverage in all areas of Sweden with a number of very tough requirements of the documentation of how such coverage was achieved for the different services available in UMTS.
Separate engineering teams from DanCell supported three such projects in cooperation with Ericssons project management teams for the different operators and two of the operators actually won their licenses reflecting on the success of the joint effort and long hours put in by the Ericsson-DanCell task forces.
